Here's question number two- My mom whenever we are sick or in pain, resorts to reciting certain surahs such as surah yaseen, or surah al fatiha over the water and has us drink it. Is this bid'ah? In urdu she calls it "dum kiya hua pani". I tried looking it up online but no such commentary has been given.

  3. Brother Abdul Waheed, the hadeeth states 3 qualities of the person who should be made a companion, 1. seeing them should remind you of Allah, 2. talking to them and listing to their words should enlighten your knowledge of Islam, and 3. their actions should remind you of the hereafter.

  4. Sister, the action of reciting certain surahs on the water or just for the sake of getting cure is proven through authentic ahadith, which make the "dum kiya hua pani", permissible to use, but making sure the right steps are taken for it. For prove below are few ahadith: Abdul Malik ibn-e-Umair (rad) reports Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) said, "In surah'Fatihah, there is cure for all ailments."(Darami and Bahaqi In the Chapter of Imaan).
It also occurs in Sihah (the six authentic books of hadeeth) that the Sahabah used to read Surah Fatihah' and blow upon those bitten by a snake or a scorpion, and even on the epileptic and on the mentally deranged.
It is reported in another hadith, "Whoever reads Surah Yaseen, is forgiven, whoever reads it in hunger, is satisfied, whoever reads it having lost their way, finds the way, whoever reads it on losing animal, finds the same, and when one reads it apprehending that their food will run short, that food becomes sufficient, if one reads it beside a person who is in the throes of death, the same are made easy for them, if anyone reads it on a women experiencing difficulty in child-birth, her delivery becomes easy."

  5. Assalamualaikum WRWB!

Thank you for starting this BLOG. I think it will serve effectively for many people to learn and ask important questions about deen.

I will appreciate if you can share with us some basic principals of whom can or cannot be given Zakat Charity and some basics about the necessary steps to take to give this charity to the right (deserving) people as intended in our religion.

Sometimes a group of my family members distributes basic food necessities from Zakat Charity funds. We distribute this food to workers without knowing if they are deserving of Zakat Charity. We believe most of the workers should be eligible however, we never interviewed them so as to protect their humility and self-respect.

Is this practice OK and serving the purpose of Zakat? If not, I will appreciate if you could suggest proper steps one should take for making sure zakat charity is given correctly. If you could point out a lecture or any english publication on the subject it would also be appreciated.

    Jazak Allah Khair.
